| Ujjain is the Holy City | Yes or Not | With My experience |
People in Ujjain always use the word “Jai Shri Mahakal” as a greeting when they meet each other. Ujjain is like heaven for the lovers of Mahakal. Every person living in Ujjain also thinks that Ujjain is a holy city. If this thought is coming into your mind that I was born in Ujjain and grew up here, that is why I am saying this, then it is not so at all.
According to some old legend, the people of Ujjain consider this city to be a religious city, but I believe this fact to be true. Here I will share with you some interesting stories from ancient times which will also make you believe that why this city is considered to be such a holy and religious city. I have also had a very good experience in the city of Ujjain, about which I am going to tell you this.
Regarding Ujjain, 'Mahakavi Kalidas' has said in 'Meghdootam', “When the person living in heaven had to come to earth after the end of his good deeds. Then he thought why not take a piece of heaven with him.” The same heaven block is today's Ujjayini.
Ujjain has been known by various names in the past like Avantika, Ujjayini, Vishala, Pratikalpa, Kumudvati, Swarna Shringa, Amravati, etc. At present, people also call it “the city of Mahakal.” In the court of the great emperor of India, “Vikramaditya”, in whose name Vikram Samvat was run, Mahakavi Kalidas has given a very beautiful description of Ujjain and its nature in Meghdoot.
The second reason is that this holy city of Mahakal is situated on the banks of the river Shipra. It is said that Mahakal himself is the king here and protects it. According to legend, the Mahakal temple is swayambhu i.e. self-born. Simhastha Kumbh in Ujjain increases the importance of the city of Mahakal even more.
It is said that when the demons stole the “Amrut Kalash” during the “Samudra Manthan”, some drops of it were seen in Ujjain too.
Mahakal temple has great importance, every year lakhs of devotees come here to visit. It is said that every stone in Ujjain is also a symbol of Shankar. On top of the Mahakal temple is the Nagchandreshwar temple which opens once a year on Nag Panchami.
The third reason is that Lord Shri Krishna has received an education here. He spent his student life in Rishi Sandapani Ashram. Sandapani Ashram is still located in Ujjain which is a centre of faith. Apart from being the place of education of Lord Shri Krishna, it is also my education land.
This is the reason why the people here consider the city of Ujjain to be a very holy and religious city. So many stories are famous since ancient times, due to which I and the people of my city consider it to be the city of God.
These are all old stories that are prevalent. Apart from all this, I also narrate some of my experiences which show my affection for this city and its people.
Once my friend and I were drinking juice at Chowpatty in Ujjain. We had just ordered that an elderly lady came to us and started asking for some money. I and my friend used to think that beggars cheat everyone and ask for money by telling lies.
When we did not give her money, she started going there, I felt that now she will abuse us. But she went ahead saying, 'No problem Mahakal bless you'. In the same way, she started begging from many people present there, but no one neither fed him nor gave him money.
The next moment we were both surprised as the woman again came to us and pointed to the purse lying under our feet, she said, 'Son, your wallet may have fallen.' We looked down, the purse belonged to my friend.
If she wanted to beg, she could have secretly picked up the purse without informing us, but she didn't. I immediately stopped her and wanted to give her some money. But she refused to take the money. She said that I am really hungry, if possible, then give me food. God will give you long life.
She was in such a difficult time. Even then he kept his hope in God. Even when we didn't help, she left after praying for us. Perhaps by staying in Ujjain, her faith in God was so great that she believed that she would not starve.
This is the reason why Ujjain city and its people have so much faith in this religious city and God that nothing bad will ever happen to them. That is why whenever most of the people here meet each other, they meet with the slogan of “Jai Shri Mahakal.”
